It has been an electrifying Olympics for Team Canada so far, powered by historic performances throughout the games. From Canada’s first gold medal in judo last week to a gold hat trick courtesy of swimmer Summer McIntosh, there is no shortage of Canadian pride going around in Paris. And even though they can’t win them all, Sunday brought about yet another remarkable first by a Canadian athlete. Redmond Shannon is in Paris with more. A Taiwanese boxer at the centre of a gender controversy has fought her way into a medal position. Lin Yu-ting won her match Sunday, joining Algeria’s Imane Khelif in the semi-finals. Their inclusion in the games has sparked a torrent of backlash but the International Olympic Committee has staunchly defended both athletes, confirming that they are both women. Bianca Facchinei reports. Firefighters from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have been deployed to help battle the wildfires in Jasper, Alta. Global' s Emma Convey spoke with a few of them before they departed for their mission. An off-duty officer in Toronto was shot in the leg Saturday night after he recognized a suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for attempted murder. The off-duty officer was in the area of Bathurst and King streets just after 11:30 p.m. Aug. 3 when he saw the wanted man and called for on-duty officers to respond, police said. Kayla McLean reports. Canadian Blood Services is asking people to consider rolling up their sleeves as the need for blood often spikes after a long weekend. As health reporter Katherine Ward explains, the need for donated blood will continue throughout August, and the agency is looking to fill tens of thousands of appointments to keep up with demand.
