Canadian premiers called for a “meaningful” dialogue with the Trudeau government on the pause on carbon pricing for home heating oil, after a meeting of provincial and territorial leaders in Halifax, N.S. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, chair of the latest Council of the Federation meeting, said he is “sympathetic to the discussions” around the carbon pricing pause on home heating oil, and also said he believed the Trudeau government should do away with carbon pricing. “I would ask that the federal government address those concerns in a meaningful way that’s fair, but ultimately I think they should just get rid of the carbon tax and work with the provinces on something that would actually help to preserve our planet,” he said, adding he doesn’t think carbon pricing is “effective.” Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said Monday the premiers’ complaint isn’t with the program to switch Canadians from home heating oil to heat pumps but that it is unfair to those who heat their homes in different ways but still struggle with rising costs. Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she didn’t believe heat pumps were a viable solution in her province as they “don’t work particularly well at below -25 degrees.” The premiers also addressed Canada’s beleaguered health-care system and the lack of affordable housing.
