Canada-India tensions: Singh urges sanctions, ban of Hindu-nationalist paramilitary group RSS

New Democrat Party Leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday called for sanctions on Indian diplomats and a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevek Sangh (RSS), a Hindu-nationalist volunteer paramilitary group with close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We need to take every step to keep Canadians safe. The RCMP has exposed a very serious threat, and now let’s take that threat seriously and act accordingly,” he said, a day after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced it had a significant amount of information on criminal activity allegedly orchestrated by agents of the Indian government. Ottawa announced Monday it was expelling six Indian diplomats and consular officials related to a “targeted campaign against Canadian citizens.” India retaliated on Monday by withdrawing its envoy from Canada and ordering the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats. Singh also urged Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre to obtain security clearance, saying it is important that all party leaders convey a united front. “I don’t want the Indian government or Modi to think they’ve got someone in Canada who’s willing to look the other way and ignore what’s going on,” he said.
