As an intense bombing campaign inside Lebanon stretches into its third day, Israel has indicated that a ground invasion into its northern neighbour could be imminent. During a visit to Israel's north, army chief Herzi Halev said the more than 2,000 airstrikes fired since Monday were designed to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure and prepare for a possible ground incursion. The U.S., France and several Arab nations are reportedly working to secure a ceasefire plan at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, and a special meeting on the escalating conflict has also been called at the Security Council. Jeff Semple has more. Since October 2023, the federal government has advised Canadians to leave Lebanon while commercial options remain available. On Wednesday, officials are now telling those who haven't yet to “leave now.” The danger is escalating, but many would be leaving behind friends and family who can't escape the conflict. Touria Izri reports. As expected, the Trudeau minority government survived a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons. The motion was tabled by the Conservatives but it did not get the support of the other two opposition parties. And it will take all three opposition parties — the Conservatives, Bloc Quebecois and New Democrats — to vote together to bring down the government and force an election. In southwestern Quebec, volunteers are spending much of this week underwater, as part of a critical clean-up project. Divers are working off the city of Beauharnois near Montreal, collecting some of the thousands of tires that were intentionally placed in the St. Lawrence River.
