Global National: June 7, 2024 | What Ticketmaster's data leak means for Canadians
In tonight's top story: The personal information of Canadian Ticketmaster customers appears to have been stolen by hackers, according to a sample of the data shared with Global News. Twelve files containing spreadsheets of data allegedly represent a small fraction of the Ticketmaster data stolen by infamous hacking group ShinyHunters. The group claimed early last week that it stole 1.3 terabytes of data, containing the personal information of 560 million customers. Mike Drolet reports. Montreal police arrested 15 people after dispersing pro-Palestinian protesters from occupying a McGill University building. Brayden Jagger Haines reports. Palestinian-Canadian families desperate to get loved ones out of Gaza are accusing the Canadian federal government of putting unnecessary and "unfair" roadblocks in their way. The government has said it will grant up to 5,000 temporary visas to residents of Gaza. Only a fraction of those visas have actually been green-lit, and then, only after people find a way to get out of Gaza and into Egypt. And as Heather Yourex-West tells us, families with loved ones in harm's way say the delays are fully preventable and within the government's control. Canadian border workers now have a few more days to hammer out a deal to avoid a strike. Last-minute talks led to a delay in looming job action for 9,000 employees with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). As David Akin reports, the union now says there won't be a strike until at least Wednesday. Three months after Canada’s anti-money laundering watchdog Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (Fintrac) was hit by a cyberattack, a critical system used by the national financial intelligence agency remains offline. Experts say the outage leaves Canada with a major blind spot to identifying terrorist financing and other serious crimes. While Fintrac says it’s found a workaround for most submissions, critics argue the gap is still significant. Carolyn Jarvis reports. Plus, there's been a lot of reflection this week on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, but the fight was far from over on that day. On June 7th, 1944 a group of Canadians were executed by Nazi soldiers after being taken as prisoners of war. Heidi Petracek speaks to the grandson of a Mi'kmaw soldier among the first killed in what's known as the Ardenne Abbey massacre. And it's been three decades since a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup. Now, the Edmonton Oilers are the team with a chance to break the drought. Game one of their series against the Florida Panthers gets underway on Saturday. Most Canadians are fiercely loyal to their favourite teams. But as Eric Sorensen reports, the oilers may get a bandwagon boost in the finals.
