One Million Canadians Could Be Invited to File Using a Pre-Filled CRA Return
Filing a Canadian income tax return could become much simpler for about one million people next year. Beginning in March 2027, the Canada Revenue Agency plans to invite eligible lower-income Canadians with simple tax situations to review and submit a return that CRA has already pre-filled using information it has on file.
Starting in March 2027, approximately one million eligible Canadians will be invited to use CRA’s new pre-filled return service for their 2026 taxes. If you want to be considered, there are steps worth taking now — including filing your 2025 return by October 31, 2026 and making sure your CRA account is properly set up.
What Is a Pre-Filled Tax Return?
Instead of starting a tax return from scratch, eligible Canadians will be able to sign in to their CRA account and see a return already populated with information CRA has available.
The taxpayer will be able to review the information, make updates and add anything that is missing.
They can then accept and submit the return to CRA.
The service will be free.
A pre-filled return does not mean you should simply click submit without checking it. CRA says taxpayers will be able to verify and update the information and add anything missing before accepting the return.
Who Could Get an Invitation?
CRA says the initial service is aimed at individuals with lower incomes and simple, non-taxable situations.
You may be invited if you:
- filed a 2025 tax return by October 31, 2026,
- have a lower income and simple, non-taxable tax situation,
- have a CRA account, and
- have your CRA correspondence preference set to electronic mail.
Meeting these conditions does not necessarily guarantee an invitation. CRA will determine who is eligible for the initial rollout.
There Is an October 31 Deadline Worth Knowing
CRA specifically says people who want the opportunity to be invited should have filed their 2025 tax return by October 31, 2026.
They should also have a CRA account and set their correspondence preference to electronic mail by that date.
That makes October 31 an important date for someone who has not yet filed a 2025 return but may fit the other eligibility requirements.
When Will Pre-Filled Returns Be Available?
CRA plans to launch the service in March 2027.
The initial rollout is expected to reach approximately one million people filing their 2026 income tax and benefit returns.
The government plans to expand access substantially after that.
| Tax Filing Year | Planned Availability |
|---|---|
| 2026 return filed in 2027 | About 1 million people |
| 2028 return filed in 2029 | Up to 5.5 million people |
Why Does Filing Matter If You Don’t Owe Tax?
This is one of the main reasons CRA is expanding simplified tax filing.
Some Canadians with low incomes do not file because they don’t owe income tax.
But filing a tax return is also how CRA determines eligibility for many benefits and credits.
Depending on your circumstances, filing can affect access to payments such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, Canada Child Benefit, Canada Workers Benefit and certain provincial or territorial benefits.
If you qualify for government benefits or refundable credits, not filing a return can mean payments are delayed or never calculated.
Is CRA Actually Filing Your Taxes Automatically?
The pre-filled return service should not be confused with CRA automatically submitting your return without you seeing it.
With the new pre-filled service, eligible taxpayers will be able to access the return through their CRA account.
They must review and accept the return before it is submitted.
CRA has also been developing a separate deemed-filing initiative for certain eligible individuals. That is a different process from the pre-filled return service launching broadly in March 2027.
What Information Will CRA Use?
CRA says the return will be pre-filled using information it already has available when the taxpayer accesses the return.
CRA already receives considerable tax information directly from employers, financial institutions, pension administrators and other organizations.
But CRA may not have every piece of information relevant to your personal situation.
That is why reviewing the return before submitting it remains important.
What Should You Do Now?
If you think you could qualify for the new service, CRA has identified several practical steps.
- Make sure your 2025 tax return has been filed.
- Register for a CRA account if you do not already have one.
- Check that your personal information is current.
- Set your CRA correspondence preference to electronic mail.
What If You Aren’t Invited?
The pre-filled return program will initially be limited, so many Canadians will continue filing their taxes normally.
CRA also offers SimpleFile services for eligible people with lower incomes and simple tax situations.
SimpleFile can be available digitally, by phone or by paper, depending on eligibility.
Free tax clinics are another option for Canadians with modest incomes and simple tax situations who need assistance filing.
The Bottom Line
Canadian tax filing is about to change for a significant number of people.
Starting in March 2027, CRA plans to offer approximately one million eligible Canadians a pre-filled 2026 tax return that they can review, update and submit through their CRA account.
The program is expected to expand to as many as 5.5 million people by 2029.
For someone who may qualify, the most important date right now is October 31, 2026. CRA says your 2025 return should be filed by then, and your CRA account and electronic correspondence settings should be ready if you want the opportunity to receive an invitation.
