VIPNews stands for Valuable Information for People.
VIPNews.ca monitors Canadian government information for changes that can affect your money, taxes, benefits, pension, work, home or small business—and explains what they mean in plain English.
Our goal is simple: Government Information Without the Government-Speak.
What We Cover
Canadian governments and public agencies publish an enormous amount of information. Much of it will never affect your everyday life. Some of it can affect your next paycheque, tax return, benefit payment, mortgage, pension or the cost of running a business.
That is the information VIPNews focuses on.
Our primary coverage areas include:
- Taxes and CRA changes
- Pensions and government benefits
- Employment, wages and payroll costs
- Housing and mortgages
- Small business rules and costs
- Cost-of-living programs and changes
How We Choose What to Cover
We don’t try to report every government announcement. Instead, we look for information with a practical consequence for Canadians.
The basic question behind our coverage is:
Does this change materially affect someone’s money, benefits, pension, taxes, home, job, obligations or small business?
If the answer is yes, it may be worth explaining. If it is primarily a speech, political announcement, ceremonial event or institutional update with little practical impact, it generally isn’t what VIPNews is about.
We Start With Official Sources
VIPNews uses official Canadian government and public-agency information as the foundation for its reporting.
Depending on the subject, sources may include the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, Statistics Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, federal departments, Parliament, government legislation and regulations, and other official agencies.
Where appropriate, articles include links to the underlying official sources so readers can examine the information themselves.
Proposed Is Not the Same as Law
Government announcements can be confusing. A proposal, budget measure, consultation, bill or planned change is not necessarily a rule that is currently in force.
VIPNews makes an effort to distinguish between measures that have been proposed, measures that have been enacted, and rules or programs that are actually in effect.
When that distinction is important, we explain it rather than presenting a proposed change as a completed one.
No Political Commentary
VIPNews is not a political commentary website.
Our interest is in the practical effect of government information, not in telling readers what to think about a political party, politician or policy.
When a government decision affects Canadians financially or changes a rule they need to understand, our job is to explain the change as clearly and factually as possible.
Plain English First
Government information is often written for administrators, lawyers, accountants or policy specialists. That can make a relatively simple change unnecessarily difficult to understand.
VIPNews aims to answer the questions a reader is more likely to have:
- What changed?
- When does it happen?
- Who is affected?
- How much money is involved?
- Do I need to do anything?
- Where can I verify the information?
Accuracy and Updates
Government programs, tax amounts, benefit rates, eligibility requirements, deadlines and legislation can change. VIPNews uses current official information when preparing articles, but readers should always consult the official sources linked in an article when making financial, tax, legal or other important decisions.
If circumstances change after an article is published, information in an older article may no longer reflect the current rules.
Our Purpose
VIPNews exists to make useful government information easier to find and easier to understand.
Government changes. What they mean for your money.
