Canada’s immigration strategy will focus on aligning policy with labour market needs: Miller
Canada’s immigration strategy in the coming years will focus on aligning immigration policy with the country’s labour market needs, immigration minister Marc Miller said on Tuesday as he unveiled the strategic immigration review report in Ottawa. Miller took questions from the media following his announcement, where he detailed a more welcoming experience for newcomers, the digital modernization of immigration applications, the improvement of the application processing service standard, and aiding smaller cities to retain more immigrants. Appeasing Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) survey responses, Canada's new immigration system aims to boost Canada's economic growth, while helping businesses and communities prosper by prioritizing newcomers that meet specific employment demands — including those with expertise in construction and health care. Despite the federal government’s position that immigration is crucial to filling Canada’s labour shortage, there appears to be dwindling support among Canadians for more immigration. According to a survey from the Environics Institute, 44 per cent of Canadians agree with the statement that “overall, there’s too much immigration to Canada." A pain point for many of those being the cost of entering the housing market.
