Canada pulls 41 diplomats from India after diplomatic immunity stripped | FULL
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced on Thursday that Canada has withdrawn 41 diplomats from India in the past 24 hours, after the two countries failed to resolve a dispute related to Ottawa’s claims that New Delhi may have been involved in the murder of a Canadian citizen. Joly said that Canada facilitated the safe departure of these diplomats and their dependents from India, due to safety concerns as they were in danger of having their immunity stripped. “The only thing we're encouraging India to do is to respect international law. So that is why today we are we have a principled approach, which is to make sure that we will not reciprocate to their action of getting rid of diplomatic immunities to 41 of our diplomats, which is clearly contrary to international law,” Immigration Minister Mark Miller said. Miller further added that while processing times for applications from India would be slower due to reduced staff, urgent cases would be given priority. Canada remains committed to welcoming Indian citizens despite the current situation. Relations between Canada and India have been strained since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a month ago that Canadian intelligence services had “credible evidence” that agents of the Indian government may have been involved in the killing of a Sikh leader near Vancouver.
