October 9 Is a Payment Date Worth Checking If You’re a Lower-Income Worker or Ontario Resident
Two government benefit payments administered by the Canada Revenue Agency are scheduled for October 9, 2026. Eligible Canadians may receive the Advanced Canada Workers Benefit, while eligible Ontario residents may receive their monthly Ontario Trillium Benefit.
The Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) and Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) are both scheduled for October 9, 2026. They are separate programs with different eligibility rules, and receiving one does not automatically mean you will receive the other.
What Is the Advanced Canada Workers Benefit?
The Canada Workers Benefit is a refundable tax credit intended to help eligible individuals and families who are working and earning a lower income.
Instead of making eligible workers wait until tax filing season for the entire benefit, CRA automatically pays part of the Canada Workers Benefit in advance.
These payments are known as the Advanced Canada Workers Benefit.
CRA distributes the advance portion in three payments during the benefit year.
| 2026 ACWB Payment | Date |
|---|---|
| First payment | January 12, 2026 |
| Second payment | July 10, 2026 |
| Third payment | October 9, 2026 |
Do You Have to Apply for the Advanced Payment?
In most cases, there is no separate application for the advanced payments.
CRA determines eligibility using information from your income tax and benefit return.
If you were entitled to the Canada Workers Benefit on your tax return and meet the requirements for advance payments, CRA can issue the payments automatically.
CRA uses your tax return to determine whether you qualify for benefits and credits. Even if your income is low enough that you do not expect to owe income tax, failing to file can mean missing or delaying government benefit payments.
Who Is the Canada Workers Benefit Designed For?
The benefit is aimed primarily at lower-income Canadians who earn income from employment or self-employment.
Eligibility depends on several factors, including:
- your working income,
- your adjusted family net income,
- whether you have an eligible spouse,
- whether you have eligible dependants,
- your province or territory of residence, and
- whether you meet the other CWB eligibility requirements.
There is also a disability supplement for eligible individuals who qualify for the Disability Tax Credit.
Why Your Payment May Be Different From Someone Else’s
The Canada Workers Benefit is income-tested.
That means there isn’t one flat payment amount that every eligible Canadian receives.
The amount depends on your income and family circumstances, and maximum amounts and income thresholds can vary for residents of Quebec, Nunavut and Alberta.
The easiest way to check your actual expected payment is through your CRA account.
Ontario Residents May Also Receive the Trillium Benefit
October 9 is also the scheduled payment date for the Ontario Trillium Benefit.
The OTB combines three Ontario tax credits:
- the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit,
- the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, and
- the Ontario Sales Tax Credit.
The program is funded by the Province of Ontario and administered by CRA.
Why Doesn’t Everyone Get the Ontario Trillium Benefit Monthly?
How your OTB is paid depends partly on your annual entitlement and the option selected on your tax return.
The annual entitlement is normally divided into monthly payments.
However, if your annual 2026 OTB entitlement is $500 or less, CRA generally pays the entire amount as one lump sum in the first payment month rather than sending monthly payments.
If your entitlement is more than $500 and you elected to defer the payment, CRA says the amount will instead be paid as one payment at the end of the benefit year on June 10, 2027.
That does not automatically mean something is wrong. You may have already received your full annual entitlement as a lump sum, chosen to receive it later, or your eligibility may have changed.
Other October Government Payment Dates
October is a busy month for federal and CRA-administered benefit payments.
| Benefit | October 2026 Payment Date |
|---|---|
| Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit | October 5 |
| Advanced Canada Workers Benefit | October 9 |
| Ontario Trillium Benefit | October 9 |
| Canada Disability Benefit | October 15 |
| Canada Child Benefit | October 20 |
| CPP and Old Age Security | October 28 |
What If Your October 9 Payment Doesn’t Arrive?
CRA advises recipients of the Advanced Canada Workers Benefit and Ontario Trillium Benefit to wait 10 working days after the scheduled payment date before contacting CRA about a missing payment.
Before calling, check your CRA account.
It can show your expected benefit payments, payment amounts and other information that may explain why a payment has changed or stopped.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
- Check your CRA account for your expected benefit payments.
- Make sure CRA has your current address.
- Check that your direct-deposit information is correct.
- If your marital status has changed, make sure CRA has been notified.
- If you have outstanding tax returns, file them as soon as possible because late filing can delay benefits.
The Bottom Line
October 9, 2026 is an important benefit date for some Canadian households.
Eligible lower-income workers across Canada may receive an Advanced Canada Workers Benefit payment, while qualifying Ontario residents may also receive their monthly Ontario Trillium Benefit.
The two payments are separate, so some Ontario residents could potentially receive both if they independently qualify for each program.
If you’re unsure whether money is coming, your CRA account is the best place to check your expected payment date and amount before October 9.
